engine cranks but wont turn - 1966 mustang?

hi there, been working on my mustang project all week and finally got the engine to crank over, the engine cranks, tested the spark plugs to check for sparks and I'm getting them, applying gas straight to the carb, about twice I've cranked and nearly nearly got the sound of the engine turning over, also had a small mushroom cloud (real over exaggerated here lol) of gas or exhaust come out of the carb, but the car will still not turn over and run on its own? any suggestions, the engines a straight six, carb is an autolite 1100. does the carb need cleaning, is it a strip down and clean out type of thing? thanks for you help as always people
oh the motors not new its an original motor, the guy who i bought it from said it was running when pulled

Did you put new points in the distributor? set them to 0.025",this effects the timing.. It should start running for a few seconds with a prime, I use carb cleaner.. just spray some in the carb and crank it..(turn with starter) ...Once it starts with a prime, then you can worry about cleaning the carb and rest of the fuel system..

added: sometimes the rings loose there oil seal from sitting to long, so there is not enough compression to run..so what you have to do is oil them..you can spray a small amount of WD40 in the carb or add a small amount of light oil to the spark plug hole.. or even add a little oil to the prime...or use mixed 2 cycle fuel to prime it..Remember it take 3 things for a engine to run, compression, fuel, and spark at the right time..
